Raglan Bach
Located at Rangitahi Peninsula, in Raglan, this concept embodies the qualities of the emblematic surf-shack: a typology usually stripped down of the dictates of the suburban house and its market-driven parameters.
Here we sought inspiration in the best aspects of that vernacular: rationalised forms, a pragmatic arrangement of functions, prioritising the living areas and their relationship with outdoor spaces, robust fittings and finishes and passive design principles to minimise ongoing energy demands and maximise thermal comfort all-year-round.
Expressed board and batten and the mono-pitched roof composes the language, the latter formed to borrow abundant natural light on its eastern interface whilst protecting from overheating on its western elevation via recessions in the envelope.
A series of outdoor spaces of formal and informal nature create varied opportunities to experience the surroundings: dining at the generous western and eastern decks or relaxing with a book around the oversized steps that envelop those areas.
